Overview

It was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime - we hike (canoe or ride our horses) to the heart of the Canadian hinterland. A short course at the Wilderness Survival Academy to get us comfortable in this environment and a short familiarization trip and we’d be on our way.

But, we just couldn't resist going for it.

What Happened

A wild race, lots of laughs - and suddenly we’re separated from our guides and the rest of our party.

We've lost our money, our identification, our passports and our airline tickets. We have enough food to last for the rest of the day. All we have is our camping supplies, the clothes on our backs, our survival packs, and the one “luxury” item we managed to sneak into our gear. We’re alone in our teams, struggling to get back to civilization.

We’re not too worried, our Native Canadian guides told us they’d send out a search party. In the meantime, we must come up with a plan. Our guides will help us implement it and get the word out. To get home, we have to raise money for our plane fare and to replace our supplies.

The only way to survive is to take stock of our situation, figure out where we want to be, make our plans and take action! We toss around a few ideas while we construct makeshift shelters and start a bonfire to keep warm. We decide to get a good night’s sleep before we fully explore our options.

The next morning, we fish for our breakfast and cook it at our campfire. After breakfast, we begin to map our strategy using our Wilderness Survival Toolkit as a guide. We take a break and cool off in the river. We're making excellent progress by using tools like mind maps, storyboards, force field analysis, and flow charts. These are the elements of our plan:

  • Team Ground Rules
  • Product Development
  • Identifying New Market Niches
  • Marketing & Sales Strategy
  • Project Management & Planning
  • Planning a New Facility
  • Sources of Capital

Other Survivor Team Building Simulations

We pause, hunt for a bear and start a fire to cook it for lunch. Then we fine-tune our strategy and await rescue. After we are rescued, we reflect on how we can use our new toolkit to tackle real world business challenges. Our guide takes us through a number of business exercises to help us make the transition apply what we have learned when we return to work.

The Rules of Survivor

The goal of the game is to survive. The game begins when 2 teams of strangers are left in a rough terrain. There is no opportunity for planning before the game begins. Both teams scramble to gather whatever supplies they can grab. They trek across rugged terrain in search of their campsite. Exhausted, hungry and in the middle of no where, they work together to construct some make shift dwellings, get a fire going (without matches) and figure out what they're going to eat.

The inevitable jockeying for position and politicking begins almost immediately. The teams compete in a series of survival challenges. The winning team gets a valuable prize and the immunity idol. The loser must vote for one of their members to leave the island. This continues for about 40 days. At the end of the game, the last survivor wins $1,000,000.
