What are some pitfalls to avoid when planning a corporate retreat or a team building session?

To ensure that you get value from the time and money invested in each session:

  • Don't schedule your session on a Friday. Like it or not, focus will become a challenge as the day wears on.
  • Don't splurge on food and accomodation and scrimp on facilitation fees. You need an experienced facilitator to execute a session successfully.
  • Do allocate more time for your session if your group is highly analytical. They need more time to debrief and apply the session to your specific business challenges or they will leave feeling frustrated and that the session was a waste of time.

We've had a tough year. Employees are tired. Our organization is facing business contraints. How can we offer a team building session or corporate retreat that is within the scope of our budget but still effective?

One option would be for us to design a session for your group and provide self-paced, ready to use instructions, briefing presentations and team kits. You can also try a simulation. For example, try Survival: Marooned on Horseback in Jamaica's Cockpit Country. This session can be offered as a high end getaway involving foreign travel or within the scope of a limited budget. Here is how it works. If you don't have the budget to go to Jamaica this year, we can simulate some of the key elements of a Jamaican getaway in your boardroom through accelerated learning. Our founder and President, Anne Thornley-Brown is Jamaican born and she has travelled extensively and worked with executives, managers and HR professionals throughout Asia. Drawing on this experience and through the use of props and themes, we can easily simulate locations such Singapore, the Dubai Desert, Malaysia, and Bangkok.

If your budget is really tight and your people are tired, why not forego a business-related simulation this year and just give your people a break through some cost effective, team recreational activities. We can put on a salsa event. Another option would be Desert Survival: Stranded in the Dubai Desert This simulation can be offered in a highly cost effective manner if no business related debriefing is required. If you give us enough lead time, you can even save meeting room costs if we offer the session between May and the end of September as most of the session can take place outdoors. (Of course, a rain date would be advisable.) Another possibility would be a dance session. We regularly use reggae as an energizer in our sessions and have taught people as far away as Malaysian Borneo how to dance reggae. Our Wilderness Survival, a Survivor team building simulation can be offered cost effectively if you elect to camp out in tents at a group camp site. We can include tubing and canoeing and you still won't break your budget. We can also offer this simulation at a picturesque ranch and include a barbeque and trail rides on horseback.

Attention American companies in towns near the Ontario border (e.g. Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, Rochester, Ann Arbour, Detroit): Come north of the border and stretch your team building dollars. Exchange rates are still in your favour and the Rochester-Toronto ferry will soon be opening.

We also have many strategies to reduce your meeting room, refreshment and accomodation costs. Even if you don't use our team building services, we can offer you cost effective on-line or telephone consulting to recommend the best approach for your situation.

Our team has seen it all. We are bored with standard fare. Can you suggest a really unique team activity?

Absolutely, why not try polo team building or Survival: Marooned in Jamaica's Cockpit Country, our powerful Survivor style simulation. We can also custom design something unique for your team. If your budget is limited, a salsa event would be the perfect option.

What steps does The Training Oasis, Inc. take to ensure relevance to our business needs?

Our step by step approach will guide you through the process of building a cohesive team. First, we will meet with you to uncover your business needs and challenges. Together, we will pinpoint the measurable results that you want to achieve. To ensure that our approach is a perfect fit for your team, we'll find out about your corporate culture, group dynamics and the interaction and learning styles of each team member. (Participant Profile and Mini Learning Styles Inventories are included. We can go a step further and add an interaction styles inventory or 360 degree feedback to the process.) Then, we will customize one of our existing sessions (or design a brand new session) to address your business challenges.

If all you require is a one day business related team building session, we will still ensure that it is unique, memorable and tightly connected to your organization's needs.

We offer some of the most engaging and enjoyable sessions on the market but we deliver much more than "fun in the sun". We take these steps to tailor each and every session to your needs.

1. Get "buy in" from senior management.
  • Whenever possible, we interview the member of the executive team who is responsible for your area and conduct an executive briefing

2. Get "buy in" from your team.
  • Distribute a participant profile and mini learning styles inventory to give every member of your team an opportunity to have input into the session.
  • If it is within the scope of your budget, we will conduct a one hour to half day team briefing to ensure that your team building session is tightly aligned with your business issues and challenges. If you are operating under budget constraints, we can provide you with a presentation and a focused exercise to brief your team and focus the session on your business needs.

3. Devote quality time to debriefing, application and action planning.
  • For business related team building, we devote at least half of each session to addressing your specific business challenges. (Most corporate retreats and team building sessions include a one hour debriefing.)
